Porsche 968 Club Sport: Racing Heritage for the Enthusiast
The Porsche 968 Club Sport stands as a testament to Porsche’s commitment to performance and precision engineering.
Launched in 1992, it marked the culmination of Porsche's celebrated front-engined, four-cylinder legacy, beginning with the 944 from which it evolved. The 968 Club Sport carved out its niche by adopting a 'less is more' philosophy, stripping away non-essential luxuries to focus on raw driving pleasure and track capability.
Under the hood, it shares the same robust 3.0-litre engine and rear-situated 6-speed gearbox as its standard counterpart, delivering 240bhp and 225lb-ft of torque. However, its weight distribution and suspension tuning emphasise a setup that’s perfect for both spirited road driving and competitive racing. It’s no surprise that famed rally driver Walter Rohrl praised it as the best-handling Porsche of its time. The car’s prowess didn’t go unnoticed in the automotive world, earning it the title of 'Performance Car of The Year' in 1993 by Performance Car magazine.
Despite its excellence, only 1,923 Club Sports were produced globally, with a mere 179 making it to the UK in right-hand drive. This rarity underscores the special nature of the Club Sport model within Porsche’s lineup.
Our featured vehicle for the upcoming auction, which concludes on April 24th, is not just any Club Sport but a meticulously restored example by Porsche Centre Leicester. This specific unit was part of the Porsche Restoration Challenge, celebrating '40 years at the front'. Originally sold in 1993, this black beauty has clocked 87,000 miles, each one backed by a comprehensive service history.
The restoration process was thorough, costing £55,000 and taking many hundreds of hours. Every mechanical component was assessed and perfected, and the body was refreshed by Porsche’s officially recognised bodyshop, Chartwells. Today, this 968 Club Sport shines as a pinnacle of preservation and performance, embodying the very essence of Porsche’s racing heritage.
This remarkable vehicle, now part of a significant collection and residing at DK’s storage facility, is ready to continue its journey on the track or as a prized piece in a discerning collector’s portfolio. The auction is live, offering an unparalleled opportunity to own a piece of Porsche’s illustrious racing history. Don’t miss out on this auction and the legacy of the 968 Club Sport for yourself.
