Modern Classic Defined: 2010 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG at Carhuna Auction

The Mercedes SLS AMG is a design icon that stands out in the realm of supercars.

Despite being well over a decade old, it continues to capture the imagination of car enthusiasts and collectors alike. The SLS is a celebration of Mercedes and AMG engineering prowess and design innovation.

The SLS AMG was a groundbreaking model for Mercedes, as it was the first car to be entirely developed by AMG from scratch. This allowed the engineers to craft a vehicle without limitations, resulting in the SLS, which was unveiled to the world at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The SLS AMG pays homage to the iconic 1954 300 SL Gullwing with its distinctive gullwing doors, a feature that hadn’t graced a Mercedes in over fifty years. The retro-inspired design, with its elongated bonnet and rear-set cabin, exudes a sense of impending classic status from the moment you lay eyes on it.

However, the real character of the SLS AMG comes from its 6.2-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine. At the time of its release, this powerhouse produced 563 bhp and 479 lb-ft of torque, earning it the title of the world’s most powerful naturally aspirated production engine. This engine, featuring over 120 unique components compared to other AMG engines, was paired with an AMG SPEEDSHIFT 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and a lightweight carbon fibre driveshaft. The resulting symphony of sound from the V8 engine remains one of the most memorable in automotive history, especially in an era that has since shifted towards turbocharged engines.

Mercedes continued to evolve the SLS with various updates and special editions until production concluded in 2014, with the AMG GT taking its place in 2015.

The right-hand-drive Iridium Silver SLS AMG featured here, chassis number 003738, was delivered to the UK in November 2010. It has been meticulously maintained by Mercedes-Benz main dealers and shows just 19,986 miles on the odometer. Offered with a fresh service and MOT certificate from Mercedes-Benz Oxford, this example stands out with its excellent condition and only minor wear on the seat bolsters.
