Ferrari’s response to the growing competition in the high-performance sports car market

Without a doubt, the Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spider holds a unique cachet among the marque’s vintage front-engine V12 convertibles, combining rarity and arresting design while occupying an important perch in the manufacturer’s genealogy. Introduced in 1968, the 365 GTB/4 Daytona was Ferrari’s response to the growing competition in the high-performance sports car market. It boasted a 4.4-liter dual-overhead-cam V12 engine, producing 352 horsepower, making it the fastest production car of its time, dethroning the Lamborghini Miura.

The Daytona’s design, penned by Pininfarina’s Leonardo Fioravanti, featured a revolutionary shark-nose front and a sleek, aerodynamic profile. The car’s performance was equally impressive, with dry-sump lubrication, a five-speed transaxle for perfect weight distribution, and all-wheel independent suspension, ensuring sharp handling at high speeds. Its dominance in motorsport was underscored by three class victories at Le Mans and success in Group 4 GT racing.

The nickname “Daytona” was unofficially given in honour of Ferrari’s 1-2-3 finish at the 1967 24 Hours of Daytona. The Spider variant, introduced at the 1969 Frankfurt Motor Show, further enhanced the model’s allure with its open-top design. Only 121 Daytona Spiders were produced, solidifying its status as a highly sought-after collector’s item. As the last front-engine open Ferrari to feature Colombo’s classic V12, the Daytona Spider represents the ultimate evolution of Ferrari’s grand touring lineage.

This particular 1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 “Daytona” Spider by CP Autokraft is a testament to the car’s enduring legacy. Originally supplied as a GTB/4 through Sidney Marcus Ltd of North London, it was converted to a Spider by CP Autokraft, known for their meticulous and faithful transformations. The car, initially ordered in Azzurro over Blu, has passed through several notable owners, including Robert Jankel of Panther Cars, who used it as his personal vehicle.

The Daytona underwent a comprehensive restoration by Cremonini Classic in Modena, completed in 2011, with mechanical works by Sport Auto Modena. It was repainted in Bianco over Bordeaux but later changed to Grigio Ferro over Bordeaux with Nero “Daytona” inserts by Barkaways in 2021. The car now presents superbly, with only 660 miles on the odometer since restoration.
