Highly revered now, the BMW E39 M5 had its work cut for itself when the car arrived back in the late nineties. Not only did the preceding models leave rather big shoes to fill, the move away from the incomparable straight-six wasn’t ever going to be an easy one to justify. Or so it seemed. But BMW soon won its fans over and established the E39 M5 as one of the best M5s ever made.
Available via Sabe Imports is an RHD, UK-supplied 2000 BMW E39 M5 with low mileage (just about 26k miles) and in exceptionally clean condition. The pre-facelift car has just two former keepers is made even more irresistible with the well-document service history, which, according to the seller, is second to none. With zero faults, a particularly shiny Carbon Black paintwork matched with a Silverstone & Black Nappa leather interior, and a bunch of paperwork, it’s too good an example to pass.
Introduced in 1998, the E39 M5 was on sale pretty much till the mid of the noughties, and became a motoring highlight of that era. It would be a huge disservice to ignore how well it works as a package, but this M5’s appeal lies (to a large extent, if not entirely) in the S62 4.9-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine. With 400 hp, solid mid-range, and a nearly raucous orchestra that would negate the Q-car looks of the E39 almost entirely, it’s hardly a doubt why the engine is usually the talking point about the E39 M5. And let’s not forget that the rear-wheel-drive performance saloon was available with a Getrag 6-speed manual gearbox. No fiddling with menus or relying on a computer to do the shifting for you. If perfection was car-shaped, the E39 M5 would be very close to it.
Service History:
This 2000 BMW M5 comes with its service book, owner’s manual, the V5C and even a meticulously detailed history file. Some of the recent service appointments include replacement of the engine oil, filter, coolant, brake fluid, and microfilter in November 2021 — at 26,468 miles by BMW. Before that, it was sent for inspection services in October 2018 and 2019, both to BMW — its mileage for those two visits was just over 26,000 miles. To give a perspective, it currently sits at 26,877 miles. The car's latest MoT test was cleared without any advisories in May ‘23.
It is stock, this M5, except for the inclusion of new headlights, updated taillights, and a new stereo. All of which were done at Munich Legends in 2015. The car also got a new armrest and gear knob.
Full Disclosure:
This E39 M5’s Carbon Black paint looks astonishingly well, especially with the complementing Style 65 multi-spoke wheels finished in grey. The interior of this 2000 M5 is no different — the Silverstone and Black Nappa leather has an underrated appearance like the exterior. The cabin also gets an aluminium trim, anthracite headlining, and velour floor mats.
In terms of condition, despite being nearly a quarter of a century old, this car looks top notch. The detailed photo gallery shows that both the paintwork and bodywork show next to zero deviation from how the E39 would’ve looked when new aside from hardly noticeable stone chips. Elsewhere it’s clean and free from scuffs or dents — even the gorgeous factory wheels look unused except for a tiny mark on one. On the inside, it’s all good-looking and fresh, save for some tiny use-related marks and signs of wear on the driver seat’s bolster, notes the seller. And even the super-neat toolkit is present.
According to the seller, the car is fault free and that it has no warning lights on the dash. Not only is the spec appreciable, the long list of standard equipment serves as a gentle reminder that this was essentially the most well-equipped 5 Series one could buy. The S62 V8 — with double VANOS, a strong midrange, and enough poke to send the E39 M5 from a standstill to 60 mph in about 5 seconds — was obviously a bonus...

"A fine, low mileage example, which is one of the best available on the market today"
