General Description
The Spitfire was Triumphs answer to the Austin-Healey Sprite, a car that was owning the small sports car market with no remorse.
Similarly to the Sprite, the Spitfire was built using the chassis of one of its older brothers, the Herald saloon/sedan. The chassis was shortened and made lighter, giving the Spitfire the edge over the Sprite when it came to handling.
The Spitfire utilised body-on-frame construction, meaning for a stronger chassis and rear trailing arms that were attached to the body rather than the chassis.
The Spitfire was notorious for its performance in both rally and sports car championships, claiming multiple victories in both the Tour de France and Geneva rally’s. The car also went on to dominate in the SCCA National Sports car Championship, charging its way to multiple wins in the F and G production classes.
The MK IV featured a facelifted rear, with similarities being drawn between the Stag and 2000 models. The front end also received a redesign, boasting a new bonnet pressing.
The interior of the car also benefitted from a makeover, Triumph kitting out the car with a brand new full-width dash and instruments ahead of the driver rather than over the centre console.
The MK IV’s 1.5-litre engine displaced an extra 63 horsepower when compared with the MK III, although the IV was still slightly slower due to the weight increased that followed the facelift upgrades.
