Porsche’s 917 is an iconic racer. It was responsible for Porsche's first ever outright Le Mans win, it conquered all manner of race tracks and classes all over the world, and it’s one of the most recognisable shapes in motorsport history.
The brainchild of famed Porsche motorsport head Ferdinand Piëch, the 917 was Porsche’s answer to a new set of rules. Cars had to be a little less raucous, and perhaps a little slower. In 1968 development began, and the 917, ten months later, was done. It was shown to the world in March 1969, and in line with homologation rules, in April of that year 25 were shown to inspectors who went to Porsche to see if the prerequisite number of cars required to allow it to race had been built.
Over its life there were plenty of 917 variants - with and without turbos, roofs, wings.. You name it. The most famous of all is the 917K (for Kurtz - German for short). That was the car that won the 1970 Le Mans 24 Hours, and sealing its place in history.
Today you can see 917s in museums, or occasionally running at historic motoring events. It’s a joy to behold, and a truly special piece of engineering.
Built to 70% scale, the 917Jnr is powered by a key start, small petrol engine.
Capable of speeds of up to 28 mph, although the speed can be restricted if desired. There is rack-and-pinion steering, front spring suspension and hydraulic brakes to bring the car to a stop. It also has a 2-1 reduction gearbox with a wet clutch. It features full-size car engineering, simply scaled down.
It is a superb collector’s item in its own right, however, behind its incredible detailed looks, it is a fully working car for children/adults to drive and enjoy.
The chassis is a powder-coated lightweight tubular construction. Known to the current owner to be the only such example delivered with a silver chassis. The bodywork is moulded fibreglass that is a faithful tribute to the iconic 917 ‘Kurzheck’ Porsche. It rides on 10-inch wheels with pneumatic tyres.
The interior is finished with bare aluminium panels, and there is a mini bucket seat for the driver. A quick-release steering wheel is fitted, as well as working headlights and rear cooling fan, just like its full scale compadre. The overall dimensions are 2.6 metres in length and 1.6 metres in width.
This 917 will suit drivers from as young as five years old up-to fully grown adults with the child’s seat removed. It also has a removable roof section that allows taller drivers to get behind the wheel.
Top Gear magazine recently said it “might just be the greatest toy car ever built”
