General Description

The Caterham Seven owes its existence to Colin Chapman, and Lotus Cars, but at the same time, Chapman and Lotus wouldn’t be what they are today without the Seven. Chapham was, notably, obsessed with lightness and smart engineering solutions. After he’d left the Royal Airforce in the late 1940s he started to build trials cars - small, lightweight, moderately powered racers designed to get around tight, twisty courses as quickly as possible. His trick solutions, and dedication to keeping things feather light worked. His work was developed and various iterations of Lotus cars were developed, leading to the launch of the Lotus Seven at the 1957 Earl’s Court Motor Show. Weighing just 329kg, available as a kit to be built at home, or fresh from the factory, it was road legal but also a weapon in competition. The Seven was a hit.

In 1973 Lotus shifted its focus to limited series racers and higher end sports cars, so sold the rights to the Seven to Caterham Cars in the UK and Steel Brothers Limited in New Zealand. From there, the Caterham Seven has bloomed, becoming a world renowned force. Just like the original car, the modern Caterham Seven is a light, fast, exciting car to drive. They’ve set records all over the world, and have a dedicated fan base.
