Despite only releasing their first car in 2000, the Ariel Motor Company have achieved a lot within that time. The birth of their first car, the Atom, gave great excitement and showed that there was another option for those looking for a track day weapon. No longer were they limited to an Exige or the latest Caterham but they could now choose a lightweight tubular frame with a high revving 1.8 litre supercharged inline four Honda engine. They then took it to another level, replacing the Honda inline four with a V8 derived from a pair of engines from the Suzuki Hayabusa motorbike. This added to the atoms lightweight frame created a recipe for unbelievable acceleration and speed, garnering much attention from those who drove it and saw it in action.
After this triumph, Ariel decided to turn their attention to another area of the market. In 2015, they unveiled the Ariel Nomad. The Nomad moved away from the track focused Atom, to create a rugged, high-performance off-road vehicle, combining a lightweight dune buggy with modern performance. The Ariel Nomad features a distinctive and purposeful tubular steel space frame chassis, providing both strength and protection while keeping weight to a minimum. The minimalist bodywork exposes much of the mechanical components, emphasizing its raw and rugged appearance.
It is equipped with a 2.4-liter Honda K24 i-VTEC four-cylinder engine, which produces around 235 horsepower. This lightweight powerplant gives an exceptional power-to-weight ratio. Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a close-ratio 6-speed manual gearbox. One of the standout features of the Ariel Nomad is its suspension setup. It utilizes double-wishbone front and rear suspensions with adjustable dampers. This allows fine tuning of the handling characteristics to suit different off-road terrains and driving styles. The long-travel suspension provides impressive wheel articulation, enabling the Nomad to conquer rough terrain. The Ariel Nomad is purpose-built for off-roading adventures. A high ground clearance and robust off-road tires provide great traction on a variety of surfaces.
Ariel have shown despite their limited size that they can achieve great feats using their simple philosophy of a lightweight chassis mated to a lightweight but powerful engine. The Nomad is a great example of this and shows that Ariel are capable of producing cars for the road and off it.
The example offered here by Kingsbridge Autos Limited is a 2019 Ariel Nomad. This car is presented all in black, with the chassis, body and wheels all in black. This car has been specified with a number of options from factory. It comes with the Road Pack, which includes lights and IVA tested brakes. The car also has been optioned with the raised air intake, stainless fittings on brake lines and clutch, and a Hydraulic handbrake system. Visual options include the clear side panels as well as the carbon bucket seats.
Today this car presents very well, having only covered 2,300 miles from new. The car has been recently serviced by Ariel in May 2023 and will be sold with two keys. This presents an opportunity to acquire a highly capable, lightweight offroad machine that is ready to be enjoyed.
