General Description

It is often a point of debate as to what the best mid-engine V8 to come out of Maranello is. Ever since the introduction of the 308 in 1975, a long line of mid-engine V8 Ferraris have followed, with the current F8 the latest, and possibly the last, in this long line. However, the one car in this lineage that often gets hailed as the best to come out of those Maranello gates is the Ferrari 458.

Unveiled in 2009 as a replacement for the Ferrari F430, the 458 Italia quickly became the benchmark for the supercar world and the last of the naturally aspirated V8 Ferraris. In Ferrari’s first official announcement of the car, the 458 was described as the successor to the F430 but arising from an entirely new design, incorporating technologies developed from the company’s experience in Formula One. It contains one of the greatest engines ever, with a naturally aspirated 4.5 litre flat crank V8. Delivering 570bhp and reaching a top speed of 202mph and a 0-60 time of only 3.4 seconds. Power is sent through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

The 458 Spider would be introduced two years after the Italia’s initial introduction. This was then followed by the track focused 458 Speciale, which saw the power output increased and the weight reduced, creating a car that is highly coveted in motoring circles.

The Ferrari 458 saw Ferrari take a massive leap. The timeless design and award winning engine mean that this car is not only currently a modern icon, but also likely to continue to be an icon for many years to come.
