About this specific vehicle
Don’t be put off by its badging because the VX220 serves as a gentle reminder that Vauxhall did make something more special than an everyday runabout. Engineered alongside the Elise, and built on the same production line as it, the Vauxhall VX220 was a driver-orientated, lightweight car that was born out of an agreement between Lotus and GM.
Being based on the Elise, the VX220 carried the same approach to fun motoring, but it was heavier, had a longer wheelbase and wider track, and was powered by a completely different engine. Not as appreciated when new, the VX220 has turned out to be a veritable classic, especially with its values on the rise — and buyers having finally understood its importance. Plus, with specialist support and at current prices, we think the VX220 is on its way to becoming more than just a (relatively) left-field alternative to the brilliant little Lotus.
What we have here is a strikingly fresh-looking 2003 Vauxhall VX220 finished in a fitting shade: British Racing Green. It has done under 70,000 miles in the time it was with four owners and comes with supporting paperwork. It might be closely related to the Elise, but there’s no denying that the VX220 has a pretty independent style of its own and it won’t be mistaken for anything else. Especially when it looks as immaculate as the car exhibited here. But the emphasis here was on driving more than anything else, even if it was made to be more accommodating than the Elise S2. The early examples, like the one featured here, came with a 2.2-litre engine, which made 145 hp, and gave the sports car a 0-60 mph time of under 6 seconds. Having said that, it took GM a bit longer than that to sell these.
Service History:
The GJ52 WBE comes with everything from the original service manual, old certificates, and invoices for the work done on the car, to its full-service history. It has done 69,280 miles and has had timely upkeep to maintain its top shape. Some work done on it recently includes new brake pads and discs, new tyres, and a new hood. The seller further adds that the rear suspension has been refurbed and is now replete with new bushes and powder-coated components. The leather seats and steering wheel have been worked on, too.
Full Disclosure:
There can't be a doubt that it’s a well-maintained example going by its looks. The exterior paint is largely free from imperfections whereas the interior seems fresh. And the reworked parts (like the steering and seats) do add to the picture. There are some use-related marks and some of the plastic bits do present a scope to look slightly better. What’s more important is that the car’s intent is pretty evident with the interior: to offer great driving pleasure and not much paraphernalia. But even then, it doesn’t lose grace and continues to be pretty likeable — even after three decades.
It must be noted that there’s a slight mileage error with the MoT certificates. Possible explenation being that the first 2 didgets have been recorded backwards.
