Highly revered now, the BMW E39 M5 had its work cut for itself when the car arrived back in the late nineties. Not only did the preceding models leave rather big shoes to fill, the move away from the incomparable straight-six wasn’t ever going to be an easy one to justify. Or so it seemed. But BMW soon won its fans over and established the E39 M5 as one of the best M5s ever made.
UK-supplied 2000 BMW E39 M5 with low mileage (just about 26k miles) and in exceptionally clean condition. The pre-facelift car has just two former keepers is made even more irresistible with the well-document service history, which, according to the seller, is second to none. With zero faults, a particularly shiny Carbon Black paintwork matched with a Silverstone & Black Nappa leather interior, and a bunch of paperwork, it’s too good an example to pass.
Introduced in 1998, the E39 M5 was on sale pretty much till the mid of the noughties, and became a motoring highlight of that era. It would be a huge disservice to ignore how well it works as a package, but this M5’s appeal lies (to a large extent, if not entirely) in the S62 4.9-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine. With 400 hp, solid mid-range, and a nearly raucous orchestra that would negate the Q-car looks of the E39 almost entirely, it’s hardly a doubt why the engine is usually the talking point about the E39 M5. And let’s not forget that the rear-wheel-drive performance saloon was available with a Getrag 6-speed manual gearbox. No fiddling with menus or relying on a computer to do the shifting for you. If perfection was car-shaped, the E39 M5 would be very close to it.
This 2000 BMW M5 comes with its service book, owner’s manual, V5C, and a meticulously detailed history file. Most of the servicing has been carried out by BMW main dealers and BMW specialists such as Munich Legends.
Largely stock, this M5 features a few tasteful updates, including new headlights, updated taillights, and a modern stereo—all installed by Munich Legends in 2015. It also received a new armrest and gear knob.
The E39 M5’s Carbon Black paint remains in astonishingly good condition, perfectly complemented by the grey-finished Style 65 multi-spoke wheels. Inside, the Silverstone and Black Nappa leather upholstery mirrors the exterior’s understated elegance. The cabin is further refined with aluminium trim, anthracite headlining, and velour floor mats.
