When the Shelby Cobra was unveiled in 1962, it showed a simple way of building sports cars by taking a lightweight chassis and dropping in a big powerful engine. Since then, the Cobra has been hailed as the greatest sports car to ever come out of American and manufactures have tried to recapture the magic it created.
One of those Manufacturers was Dodge. In 1988, Chrysler president Bob Lutz suggested that the company should consider producing a modern Cobra. A full-sized model concept was shown at the North American International Auto Show in 1989, with public reaction being enthusiastic. After 2 years of development, the car was ready and the car became available to the public at a list price of $52,000.
The first-generation Viper featured a distinctive and aggressive design, aiming to capture the essence of the Cobra. It had a long hood, muscular fenders, and a simple yet eye-catching exterior. The interior was quite basic, reflecting a focus on performance over luxury. It was powered by an 8.0-liter V10 engine that produced around 400 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque, with the power going through a 6-speed manual transmission. This powerful engine allowed the Viper to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in around 4.5 seconds and had a top speed of over 160 mph.
The early Viper models gained a reputation for being difficult to handle due to their high horsepower and lack of traction control and anti-lock brakes. This added to their appeal among driving enthusiasts and collectors looking for a true driver's car.
This Dodge Viper RT10 is an enticing prospect for those seeking the thrills of an iconic, open-top American sports car, presented in superb condition throughout and showing a mileage of just 32,000.
Optioned in what is arguably the finest colour combination of Red over Grey interior, this Viper’s exterior is complemented by white racing stripes and later wheels refurbished in anthracite.
This Dodge Viper is accompanied by its original book pack, supporting file with a handful of MOTs invoices, and receipts, spare key fob, side windows, pop-out rear window and clip-on hood.
This example’s condition is in excellent order throughout, which is a testament to the careful ownership and low mileage. The car’s exterior is very nice, with the exception of minor chips to the front end as expected. The interior is also in excellent order, with no signs of heavy wear and tear or misuse. The car’s engine bay is in superb order, and like the rest of the vehicle shows no signs of negligence or poor storage whatsoever. Further, the car drives exceptionally well and its sonorous 8 litre V10 delivers power to the rear wheels smoothly.
Overall, this Dodge Viper is a scrupulously presented example and poses an exciting opportunity to own an unusually rare American icon that can be driven and enjoyed by its next custodian immediately.
