The A80 Toyota Supra, the fourth generation, was designed to be a high performance, dedicated sports car from the off. Its predecessor was successful, so there were big shoes to fill - something Toyota’s team knew when development began in 1989.
The A80 shared a platform with the contemporary Toyota Soarer and the Lexus SC, but the Supra wasn’t a simple carbon copy with racy bits attached. It was shorter, and designed to be far more sporting. Under the hood came either a naturally aspirated 3.0-litre 2JZ-GE inline six cylinder motor with 220bhp and 210lb ft, or a twin turbocharged version of the same engine with up to 326bhp and 325lb ft for the UK market, some 40hp more than the JDM version.
Its turbocharged offering piqued plenty of interest. Its two snails worked sequentially, meaning one spooled up before the other, giving more boost lower down the rev range before the larger charger stepped in to provide extra shunt later.
As well as a fearsome motor, Toyota went to town cutting weight from the A80. Aluminium was extensively used, carpets with hollow fibres were fitted, lightweight metals used in the steering wheel, dished out head bolts in the right places, and more, which meant the new car was at least 91kg lighter than its predecessor.
Offering blistering performance, stunning looks, mod cons, and the sort of reliability you’d expect from Toyota made the car something of a hit at launch in 1993, but then the tuners got their mitts on it. The twin-turbo car became a scene darling, with industrious engineers extracting tremendous amounts of power from it (YouTube is your friend here). As well as modifying the motor, the rest of the car was fair game for fettling. The result is that it’s increasingly difficult to find a completely unmolested manual turbocharged example.
Naturally, race cars were born from the A80 as well, and, with distinctive liveries, they became bedroom wall cars, as well as winners.
The A80 Toyota Supra represents a moment in time - a true darling of the aftermarket scene, and peak 90s coupé.
A true timewarp car. First registered in 1993, this one owner car has been treated lovingly for 30 years. It’s bone stock, even down to the original exhaust and brake calipers, which means you won’t find any Fast & Furious tricks under the hood, or anywhere else. That’s incredibly rare for an A80 supra.
Even more than just being stock this Supra is also a UK originally supplied car, complete with dealer invoice and plates. Being a UK car it is some 40hp more poweful that the JDM equivalent models thanks to steel vs ceramic turbo fans. The UK cars are hailed as the 'one to have' by collectors everywhere and with less than 200 ever made, sourcing a UK A80 Supra is fast becoming similar to hunting down a unicorn.
Rarity is reflected in valuations with average prices doubling in value between 2019 and 2022 according to data from Glenmarch.com, this is a car with a very bright future for collectors.
Only ever fueled with super unleaded, and recently treated to a full paint refresh, this is about as close as you can get to jumping in a TARDIS and heading back to the 90s to buy a brand new Supra. Everything works, including the coveted 'Active Aero' and UK spec headlight washers. It's 66,500 miles have been earned, but the car’s sole former keeper has taken meticulous care to make sure it’s in excellent condition. The car has never been tracked and has extensive history and invoices along with a fully stamped service book.
This Supra would make a fantastic addition to any modern classics collection and with a light mechanical refresh would be fully ready to be driven and used.
With 90% of the cars 65k miles covered between 1993 and 2002 this was the owners daily driver. This matches with 12 service stamps up to 2001 showing a service every year and even being serviced twice in some years. Since 2004 the car has covered just 6000 miles and has received 4 further services with the last one completed in August 2023.
The car has recently had a fresh Class 4 MOT and a full service. This Supra has also undergone a large amount of recommissioning totalling £4,000, including the following work:
With the desirable six-speed manual gearbox, and even more desirable UK spec twin turbo 2JZ-GTE motor, it comes with an extensive history. If you’re looking for a car that’ll surely appreciate, and only become more desirable as time goes on, this is it.
