General Description
The late 1980s and early 1990s were a golden age for supercars. Ferrari released the F40, Bugatti the EB110, Porsche the 959 and McLaren the F1, and at the 1988 British Motor Show Jaguar unveiled their creation for this golden age, the XJ220. The XJ220’s sleek and aerodynamic design, with a low-slung profile and distinctive styling cues amazed those that saw it on the show stand, and the promise of power coming from a 6.2 litre V12 and being distributed to all four wheels enticed some to place orders, each putting down a £50,000 deposit.
However, the XJ220 would turn out to be quite a different big cat when it hit production in 1992. The car would lose the V12 and the four-wheel drive system, with these being replaced with a 3.5 litre V6 sending its power only to the rear wheels. Despite keeping its curvaceous body and sleek design, some who had placed deposits were disappointed and, coupled with the financial difficulties of the era, asked for their money back. This meant that only 275 units were produced between 1992 and 1994. But, despite the changes and disappointment, the Jaguar managed to still create a fantastically quick and exciting car.
The 3.5 litre V6 had two turbochargers meaning it was able to produce 542 horsepower. Despite what those initial customers may have though when they heard the changes, the car was capable of from 0 to 60 mph in around 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 213 mph (343 km/h), making it one of the fastest production cars of its time.
The XJ220 also still showed remarkable technological capabilities for the time as well. The body was all aluminium and used technology and engineering knowledge from the Group C cars run by Tom Walkinshaw Racing.
The Jaguar XJ220 is considered a significant icon in automotive history, representing the pinnacle of Jaguar's engineering and design achievements. It is a rare and highly sought-after sports car that exemplifies the blend of power, innovation, and exclusivity.
About this specific vehicle
This immaculate left-hand drive XJ220, that Boutsen Classic Cars are proud to offer for auction, was initially delivered to Jaguar Germany in 1993 in Spa Silver with a Smokey Grey leather interior. The car has its original Production Record Trace Certificate from the Jaguar Heritage Trust, and original Jaguar/Daimler Germany delivery letter, confirming that it was first delivered to Germany.
This XJ220 was then imported to the UK in 1997, where it was first registered. The car has had five owners in total and has been located in France and most recently Sweden, as well as the UK and Germany in its life.
Today, this XJ220 is presented in outstanding condition, having covered 27,287 kilometres from new. The car has been used periodically and scrupulously maintained since its first ownership. There is a very thick owners and service/maintenance file, with all invoices included. All the necessary mechanical work required on an XJ220 has been done on the car by marque specialists, including:
- Harwoods Chichester
- Recardo
- Jaguar Cars / Jaguar Sport Ltd
- Sampalo Jaguar Land Rover
- Automobiles Sport & Prestige
Its beautiful "Smokey Grey" leather interior has recently been treated, and it comes with its original wheels, toolkit and XJ220 owner's handbook. It is also provided with its original set of keys (1 key for the driver door / 1 key for the passenger door) and a car cover. The car has the original XJ220 owner's handbook, but not its original service book (although all the service and maintenance invoices are provided since new, including proof of past ownership, MOTs, service/repair bills etc.).
Its current owner is a well distinguished collector, who has taken great care of the car since taking ownership of it back in 2019. Under his ownership, the car has been regularly serviced at Platinum Cars and Aston Hill - premium sport and supercar specialists, with recent service work including:
- June 2021 - New glass roof panel and Euro spec headlights (from UK import)
- May 2020 - Major detailing work on the paintwork with removal of plastic protection, new clear coat on the front facia and lower door panels, full PPF done on the entire car, brake system overhaul
- November 2018 - New period Asymetrico Pirellis (rare), new turbos, new clutch, new fuel cell, including overhaul of the fuel system, removal of the engine for servicing
As a result, the current owner underwent, in April 2023, a 2.000kms road trip to bring the car down to Monaco, with zero issues along the way. The car has also been driven by a number of automotive authorities, such as Tiff Needell, Thierry Boutsen, Harry Metcalfe and has appeared on Top Gear France.
The car runs perfectly and is still one of the most spectacular sportscars to drive on the road or circuit today with its unique “on-off” twin-turbo driving experience. This XJ220 is an amazing opportunity to purchase a car of this pedigree and a car that represents a significant period in supercar history.
