Introduced in 1990, the NSX (New Sports eXperimental) was developed by Honda to put Honda in a new light and showcase that its technology and performance was up there with the very best.
Honda had long been known for family-orientated, economical cars but Japanese rivals were starting to release fun, sexy sports cars that would boost their global appeal. Honda had been seeing great success in Formula 1 too but with no road-going appeal, a decision was made to take on the very best not only on the track, but on the road too and the project began in the mid-1980s with the HP-X (Honda Pininfarina Experimental). The goal was simple: outperform Ferrari’s V8 range but at a better price.
No expense was spared in the R&D of the NSX and the result was a 3-litre mid-engined V6, rear wheel drive car that could outperform both the Ferrari 328 and 348tb in every department. The NSX was the first-ever production car to have the chassis constructed from almost entirely aluminium, resulting in a weight saving of over 200kg compared to its steel-bodied rivals. The 3-litre aluminium V6 has a more than healthy claimed 276hp when mated to the 5-speed gearbox and produces an extremely linear power-curve all the way up to redline at 8,000 rpm.
There is much lore about Ayrton Senna being involved the development of the NSX by providing feedback on how the car drove and handled, but the likes of Lotus driver Satoru Nakajima and Bobby Raha were also heavily involved thanks to their deals with the Japanese brand. The expertise didn’t stop at the development but spilled over into the production line with every production-line worker at the new Tochigi-based facility hand-picked with at least 10 years of Honda experience behind them.
With a production run of over 15 years, today the original NSX remains one of the most important sports cars to come out of Japan, but one that redefined the boundaries of what an engaging sports car should be.
Supplied new on 1st September 1993 in Iconic Formula red, the car was purchased by our current vendor in the mid-90s after having been fortunate enough to enjoy it as his company car.
The car was regularly maintained by Honda specialists up until 2006 when the car was placed into long-term storage after an MoT at 63,233 miles.
In 2019 the car was prepped to become roadworthy again, with an MoT at 63.271 miles resulting in a first time pass and and just one advisory for a worn tyre. A service was undertaken at Marshall Honda on 14th October 2019 at a cost of £572.58.
Since then this NSX has had an MoT in 2021 at 64,093 miles resulting in a first time pass and again in 2024 at 64,607 miles with the car failing for a faulty rear light which has since been rectified. A recommissioning of the car took place at Marshall Honda in 2021 at a total cost of £3,964. Please view the documentation section for the full details.
Today this NSX presents extremely well owing to the time that it has spent in professional storage over the last 20 years. The original alloys present in an unscratched condition and the paintwork is blemish free.
There are no known faults with the car, all buttons and switchgear are reported to work as they should and the car runs, drives and changes gear without fault.
Please note that two owners of this car are the same owner, owing to the transfer of the car from the vendor’s previous employers to his personal ownership.
