By the time that 1985 rolled around, the RX-7 (known as the Savanna in the Japanese market) had been on general sale for 7 years and sold some 471,000 units during that time. The model was Mazda’s first attempt at a sports car and would go on to become the best-selling rotary-powered car of all time.
Offered as either a 2-door coupe or 2-door convertible, the second generation of RX-7 or ‘FC’ focused on appealing to the U.S market as this is where the majority of sales had been for Mazda during the first generation’s production run.
The result was a move towards more of a sports tourer setup which led to a softer suspension thanks to Mazda’s Dynamic Tracking Suspension System (DTSS) that had been inspired by the Porsche 928, and much improved handling that limited oversteer thanks to a new rack and pinion system. Disc brakes were also now standard across all variants and turbo-charging was introduced for the first time, bringing the car to a more than respectable 0-62mph sprint of circa 6 seconds and a top-speed of 149mph. During the 7 years of production, Mazda's rotary sports car yet again proved a hit with just over 272,000 units finding homes.
This particular RX-7 was first registered in Japan on the 1st May 1991 and therefore benefits from being a late production car, resulting in being fitted with all the updates form the Series 5 facelift which includes the more powerful engine rated at 215PS. Not a large amount is known about the car’s time in Japan, although it is supplied with Japanese documentation and history.
The car was professionally imported into the UK in 2024 and first registered in on 1st May 2024. Since its time in the UK the car has been sent to Scuderia Prestige to undertake the following work following its arrival on British soil:
Sand car paint work removing imperfections
Polish
Wet sand all rubber and trims removing imperfections
Complete under seal
Install new clutch
Full service
Full detail- polish/ wax/ interior detail
Such as one of the selling points of the RX-7, this car car features a host of modifications to enhance the driving experience which includes:
With a recent full-service and just 78,000 miles on the clock this presents a rare opportunity to purchase an ‘on the button’ example of one of Mazda’s greatest hits.
