The 1980s was a time of excess with power suits, red braces and when everyone wanted to be better than the next person. This stretched to cars with the 1980s seeing creations such as the Porsche 911 (930) Turbo and the Volkswagen Golf GTi become symbols of success for those who worked in the financial districts of London and New York. However, even these cars could not compete with a car that would become synonymous of the over-the-top nature of the decade. The Ferrari Testarossa.
The Ferrari Testarossa was introduced in October 1984 at the Paris Motor Show, replacing the outgoing 512 BBi. Its Pininfarina design was softer than the 512 BBi, seeing a rounded front end, flowing front and rear wings and a soft rectangular rear end. The car was also given a number of recognisable features, giving it instant recognition, including the larger side intakes.
The engine was similar to the 512 BBi, using a flat 12 with a displacement of 4.9 litres. However, it became the first flat 12-cylinder Ferrari to use four valves per cylinder. The early cars would come to be known as the 'Monospecchio' cars, as, due to a misinterpretation of a European regulation, they were only fitted with one side mirror mounted high on the A-pillar. Later cars would be fitted with side mirrors on both sides as well as replacing the single bolt knockoff wheels with the standard Ferrari five bolt pattern.
The Ferrari Testarossa would see itself become an icon in its lifetime. Its use as the vehicle of choice for Miami's favourite undercover detectives Crockett and Tubbs would give it a global stage, with Enzo Ferrari believed to be a fan of the show. Its appearance in the game Out Run also gave it great recognition among those who were raised on the arcade games of the time.
The car here that SCC are proud to offer for auction is a 1988 Ferrari Testarossa presented in the fabulous shade of Nero. The car was originally delivered new to the United States before making its way to the UK and being registered in 2019. Today, this is an exceptional car, showing that it has covered only just over 14,000 miles from new. The car currently presents very well, has been well maintained at some expense and retains its original tailored luggage set.
This presents a fantastic opportunity to acquire a low mileage example of one of the world's most iconic supercars in an attractive colour combination.
