In 1976, BMW introduced the E24 6 Series to replace the outgoing BMW E9. The E24, with its stylish 2-door coupé body, followed on from the E9 as a relaxing long distance grand tourer. However, in 1983, BMW unveiled the M635 CSi at the Frankfurt Motor Show, showing that the E24 6 Series could be so much more. BMWs M-Sport department had turned the grand GT car into a fully-fledged sports coupé, which could take on the likes of the Porsche 928.
The M635CSi was powered by a 3.5-liter inline-six, producing around 286 horsepower and 251 lb-ft of torque, and mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. With its powerful engine, the M635CSi could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 6 seconds and reach 155 mph. As well as increased power, the design of M635 CSi was more aggressive than the standard E24 6 Series, with wider arches and a more aerodynamic front spoiler. The M-Sport department went further with the performance of the M635 CSi tuning the suspension, installing larger brakes and lower profile tires to enhance its handling capabilities.
Despite the more aggressive styling and performance enhancements, the M635 CSi retained the luxurious elements of the 6 Series. Inside it kept the leather upholstery, power seats and various amenities were offered to enhance comfort.
The BMW M635CSi was produced by BMW between 1984 and 1989. It was produced in limited numbers, making rare and sought after by collectors and enthusiasts alike. The BMW M635CSi has become a classic in the automotive world, known for its powerful performance, distinctive design, and driving pleasure. It holds a significant place in BMW history, spawning what would be the start of the BMW M6 range.
