In 1984 there was great expectation on Ferrari to replace the legendary Berlinetta Boxer that had been in production for some 11 years. A new era of excess was in full flow and the U.S had not been able to purchase a twelve-cylinder Ferrari for a decade, the bar was set high and by the time the Paris Motor Show rolled around, Ferrari did not disappoint.
With design led by Leonardo Fioravanti, who already had an impressive CV consisting of the designs of the 246 Dino, Daytona and 288 GTO, the Testarossa was an instant hit becoming an overnight poster car and later becoming a cultural star becoming the vehicle of choice for Don Johnson in Miami Vice.
Compared to its predecessor, build quality was improved with the use of galvanised steel for the roof, doors and many other components ensuring an improvement to longevity. Interior space was increased, the seats revised, an adjustable steering column resulted in increased comfort which was aided by the reduced noise into the cabin thanks to the drivetrain and rear suspension being mated to separate sub frames.
Despite using the same mid-engine layout at the Berlinetta Boxer, performance was on the up. The large front mounted radiator was removed in favour of two units in front of the rear wheel, leading to the iconic design that the Tetarossa is known for today. The increased cooling allowed the extensively reworked 4,942cc flat-12 to produce an impressive 390bhp and a 0-60mph time of just over 5 seconds when tested in-period.
Whilst the 60s produced some of Ferrari’s most valuable models, it’s hard to argue that the 80s may just have been the most important for the Maranello firm. With the likes of the 288 GTO, F40 and Testarossa all playing their part in the Prancing Horse’s unrivalled story. And the market agreed, with just over 10,000 units made, the Testarossa, 512TR and the later 512M ensured the 80s icon was one of the most popular and iconic Ferraris of all time.
Supplied to its first owner, Mr MacGregor on the 1st September 1986, this UK-market ‘Monospecchio’ Testarossa was enjoyed by its first owners as by January 1990 had already recorded some 18,750 miles. Regular maintenance is recorded throughout the cars history which is backed up by a summary provided by Ferrari specialists, Foskers, in 2015.
The current vendor purchased the Vehicle in 2021 and has since been in storage ever since and now presents in remarkable condition owing to its recommissioning Tyrell Classic Car workshop in 2023 to which the car was the subject of 30 min video by Iain Tyrell. Significant work was undertaken by Iain Tyrell’s workshop, which included a cam belt change including new tensioners, replacement of all filters, replacement of seized bolts. Please view the invoice in the documentation section for the full work undertaken.
The car is supplied today with the much sought after original tan 6-piece Schedoni luggage set.
The last MoT was carried out in November 2023 resulting in a first time pass with no advisories and the car is HPI clear.
Available to view immediately, and sold with the benefit of buying with confidence from Redline Specialist Cars, this Testarossa is ready to be enjoyed and would benefit any modern classic or Ferrari collection.
