General Description
The Porsche Carrera RS 2.7 is where the RS legend truly began. Released in 1973 as a homologation car, it brought the Rennsport philosophy from the track to the road in a way no other model had done before. The Carrera RS 2.7 was far from just another 911. It marked a pivotal moment for Porsche, focusing on weight-saving and performance in a way that defined the RS name for decades to come.
Of all the Carrera RS variants, the 2.7 stands out for its groundbreaking performance and lightweight construction. Born from the racing demands of the era, the engineers at Porsche sought to create a vehicle that combined speed, agility, and precision. What emerged was a masterpiece featuring a 2.7-litre flat-six engine, producing 210 hp, and a chassis that was painstakingly lightened. The car’s Leichtbau ethos was further emphasised by the use of thin-gauge steel, lightweight glass, and a stripped-down interior. It weighed just 1,075 kg, making it nimble and lightning-fast on the track.
The Carrera RS 2.7 was instantly recognisable for its ‘ducktail’ rear spoiler, the first-ever aerodynamic wing fitted to a production car, which helped reduce lift and stabilise the vehicle at high speeds. Available in both Touring and Lightweight trims, it offered versatility for drivers seeking either a road car with racing pedigree or a more raw, track-focused machine.
What was originally planned as a limited run of 500 cars quickly turned into 1,580, thanks to overwhelming demand. People didn’t just want to race it; they wanted to drive it every day. And who could blame them? Even 50 years on, the Carrera RS 2.7 is still considered one of the most collectible and thrilling Porsches ever made. It’s the car that cemented Porsche’s reputation for making road cars capable of dominating the track.
About this specific vehicle
This Porsche Carrera 2.7 RS Evocation is a beautifully crafted homage to one of the most iconic cars in Porsche’s history. Starting life as a 1976 911 Carrera 2.7 S, it spent its early years under the Californian sun before being imported to the UK in 2018. Once here, it was transformed into an RS Lightweight spec model, capturing the essence of the legendary 1973 Carrera RS 2.7 with impressive attention to detail.
The car is finished in Viper Green, an original Porsche factory colour, which perfectly complements its classic look. Following a bare-metal respray by OSC in Chessington back in 2018/2019, the paintwork remains in great condition. Thanks to its time in the dry Californian climate, only minor corrosion needed to be addressed during the restoration. It features genuine metal front wing extensions, a fibreglass ducktail spoiler on a metal rear engine cover, and a period-correct ‘long bonnet’ from Porsche. In line with the Lightweight spec, both front and rear bumpers are fibreglass, staying true to the original RS ethos.
The wheels are rare original Fuchs alloys with deep dish rears, adding to its authentic appearance. Inside, the cabin strikes a balance between originality and practicality. The steering wheel and dashboard have been re-trimmed in Nappa leather, while genuine 1970s Porsche electric seats provide a comfortable ride without compromising the car’s classic charm. Electric windows have also been fitted, but the original manual winders are still available if the next owner prefers a more retro setup.
Mechanically, the 2.7-litre engine is close to the original Carrera RS specification, running a Bosch CIS fuel injection system. Recent work by Porsche specialists includes rebuilding the fuel injection distributor and warm-up regulator, ensuring the car is in excellent condition both to drive and enjoy.
This Evocation perfectly captures the spirit of the original Carrera RS 2.7, with its classic design and its sprinkle of modern touches, making it as usable as it is iconic.
