In the years following World War II, demand for affordable, practical and economical motoring was starting to boom. Both the Fiat 500 and 600 brought motoring to the masses in post-war Italy becoming best sellers year after year. Demand for a more family-orientated vehicle resulted in the launch of the 600 Multipla.
Debuted in January 1956 at the Brussels Motor Show, the design was like nothing that had been seen before. The engine is mounted behind the rear axle, allowing the cabin to be extended throughout the rest of the vehicle providing unrivalled space in its class and allowing 4-6 seats depending on configuration. Offered in various guises such to accommodate commercial needs, with a taxi version also offered the 600 Multipla would provide a phenomenon with some 240,000 units finding homes whilst in production between 1956-1967.
This particular Fiat 600 was manufactured on 10th July 1959 to a Barbieri Ruggero of Genoa at a purchase price of 760,000 liras. Now finished in attractive two tone yellow & red, with matching body colour wheels, unusually this Fiat 600 is also accompanied by a matching caravan finished in the same colours and offering a unique piece of motoring.
The registration card shows the date of January 18, 1974 which suggests that the vehicle was registered as a taxi from 1959 until 1974 where it was then re-classified. The second owner then owned the vehicle from 1979 up until 2016 where it has remained in the same family since. It is believed that the car has remained in the city of Genoa since first registration with just four previous owners.
At time of restoration the mileage indicated was 18,253 km to which was left untouched during the restoration and still displays today. The car has not since been driven post restoration. There are invoices for the work carried out as this was undertaken by the owning family’s workshop, Spillo Garage and has been fully documented and accompanied by over 100 photographs.
A 2024 inspection report by RINA was undertaken which assessed the vehicle’s condition including engine, bodywork, brakes, transmission as well as road safety to which it passed with flying colours. The engine has been noted as having very few miles on it, and the car described as in ‘excellent condition’
